A Windows computer with an internet connection
Your Generous VPN configuration file (sent to you by email)
10 minutes of time

Go to this webpage
Download the OpenVPN package for your Windows version
Install the OpenVPN program

Open the following folder on your computer: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\Config
Copy the relevant .ovpn cpnfiguration files that were emailed to you into that folder

Start the OpenVPN program if it is not open already
Click the OpenVPN icon in your taskbar tray
Click the connect button
When connected the icon will turn green, this can take up to a minute

Go to the Generous VPN homepage
Check if the information bar at the top says you are connected

For Mac OSX

A Mac computer with an internet connection
Your Generous VPN configuration file (sent to you by email)
10 minutes of time

Go to this webpage
Click the download link
Install the Tunnelblick program

Double click the .conf configuration file sent to you by email
Confirm that you want to import this file
Confirm your password when asked

Start the Tunnelblick program if it is not open already
Click the Tunnelblick icon in your menu bar (right top)
Click the connect button for Generous VPN
When connected Tunnelblick will show ‘connected’, this can take up to a minute

Go to the Generous VPN homepage
Check if the information bar at the top says you are connected

For Linux users

Compatible with most major distributions

⚠️ The Linux operating system is often used by more advanced users. This manual is geared towards them. If you are confused by these instructions contact Generous VPN support. This guide assumes Debian based systems.

A Linux computer with an internet connection
Your Generous VPN configuration file (sent to you by email)
10 minutes of time

Open a terminal
Run "sudo apt install openvpn"

Move your config file to ‘~/generous-vpn’

Run 'sudo openvpn –config ~/generous-vpn/yourCpnfigFile.conf'

Go to the Generous VPN homepage
Check if the information bar at the top says you are connected
Or run 'dig +short myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com'

For iPhone/iPad users

Compatible with iPhone, iPad

An iOS mobile device with an internet connection
Your Generous VPN configuration file (sent to you by email)
10 minutes of time

Open the Appstore
Search for ‘OpenVPN Connect’
Select ‘OpenVPN Connect’ by OpenVPN Technologies
Install the app

Open the email with your .ovpn file
Select the .ovpn file
Open it with the OpenVPN Connect app

Use the OpenVPN connect app to activate your VPN connection when needed

Go to the Generous VPN homepage
Check if the information bar at the top says you are connected

For Android users

Compatible with most phones and tablets

An Android device with an internet connection
Your Generous VPN configuration file (sent to you by email)

Open the Play Store
Search for ‘OpenVPN Connect’
Install ‘OpenVPN Connect’ by OpenVPN

Go to the email with the configuration file
Download the configuration file
Open the OpenVPN Connect app
Click the menu button (three dots) in the upper right corner
Select ‘import’
Select your configuration file

Use the OpenVPN app to activate your VPN connection when needed

Go to the Generous VPN homepage
Check if the information bar at the top says you are connected
